FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is the interview process?
A: After submitting a resume and cover letter, qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview. Initial interviews typically last one hour, during which time the applicant will meet with at least two program staff members. A short video clip of a MAAX curriculum session will be shown during the interview so the applicant can see another facilitator in action in the classroom. They will also be asked to discuss their previous work with young people, and any work they've done in school systems. Those who make it through the first round of interviewing will be asked to return for a second interview. The second interviews are done with groups of four facilitator candidates. Each year there is a cut off date at which point all applicants will be notified if they have been chosen for hire.

Q: What is the profile of a desirable candidate for the MAAX facilitator position?
A: Desirable facilitators are effective communicators and comfortable speaking in front of a classroom and managing the classroom behavior of middle school students. They enjoy working with youth and have experience in education, youth development or social services. They have a sense of humor, in addition to being flexible and compassionate.

Desirable facilitators demonstrate professional integrity in all aspects of their work, including consistent promptness for all of their classes and training sessions, completing all paperwork on time, and following through on assignments.  They demonstrate commitment and dedication to working with youth, and take initiative when necessary. They also have excellent planning and organizing skills. Racial/ethnic minorities and Spanish-speaking individuals are especially encouraged to apply.

Q: How many hours per week can I expect to work?
A: The position requires a minimum of five hours and a maximum of ten hours. Two of those hours will be spent every Friday in a supervision meeting with supervisors and other program facilitators. Driving time is not included.

Q: Can I get credit for this position, even if I’m getting paid?
A: Doctoral candidates get paid for their work on the MAAX project and may receive course credit. For all other students, if you are receiving course credit for MAAX as a practicum or internship placement, you can be paid for your work after the completion of the course (e.g., fall-internship, spring-paid employment). If you are a student seeking an employment opportunity, you can be pad for working on the MAAX project.

Q: What kind of training is available for facilitators?
A:
All facilitators attend two full days of orientation/training before the program begins. After that, facilitators attend two-hour weekly supervision sessions every Friday at The Consultation Center from 3:00-5:00.
